Hypovanadous Fluoride, VF2

Hypovanadous Fluoride, vanadium difluoride, VF2, has not been isolated, but a reddish-violet solution containing it is obtained by the action of excess of hydrofluoric acid on vanadium aluminium silicide, V8Al2Si13, in the absence of air. In the presence of air the solution becomes green, with evolution of hydrogen:

2VF2 + 2HF = 2VF3 + H2.

The solution behaves generally like one of vanadium dichloride.
